Things to Do in Banff and Canmore: A Perfect Adventure List

Based on our amazing weekend getaway, here’s a list of top things to do in Banff and Canmore for an unforgettable trip. Whether you’re into outdoor adventures, cozy dining, or stunning scenery, this list has something for everyone:

1. Relax at Kananaskis Nordic Spa

  • Unwind in a serene system of hot and cold pools, saunas, and relaxation areas surrounded by the beauty of the Rockies.
  • Kananaskis Country, where the Kananaskis Nordic Spa is located, has a rich history. The area was originally inhabited by the Stoney Nakoda and Blackfoot peoples, who used the region’s resources for hunting, fishing, and ceremonial purposes. European fur traders later explored the area, and in the 19th century, it became a key route for travelers venturing through the Canadian Rockies. Today, it remains a cherished location for outdoor activities and relaxation.
  • The Kananaskis Nordic Spa itself is designed to harness the healing power of nature, offering a peaceful and rejuvenating experience with its hot and cold pools, saunas, and relaxation areas—making it the perfect place to unwind and soak in the incredible surroundings.

2. Explore the Town of Canmore

  • Rocky Mountain Bagel Company: Grab a delicious breakfast, including gluten-free options!
  • Eclipse Coffee Shop: Sip on a warm drink while enjoying the laid-back mountain town vibe.
  • Stonewaters: A quirky boutique filled with unique, girly finds—great for gifts or souvenirs.

3. Go Snowmobiling and Explore Golden, BC

  • Join Ultimate Snowmobiling for an adrenaline-packed tour through pristine wilderness.
  • Grab a meal at The Bar, Golden’s famous town bar known for its amazing food and warm, welcoming vibes.
  • We also kept hearing how incredible Kicking Horse Ski Resort is. Although we didn’t have time to visit, it’s definitely on our list for next time!

4. Ski and Visit the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

  • Hit the slopes at Lake Louise Ski Resort with their 2-4 PM afternoon tickets, perfect for squeezing in some snowboarding or skiing.
  • Afterward, head to the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise to unwind. Sip on coffee, explore their charming shops, and take in the breathtaking views of the frozen lake.
  • Don’t miss the outdoor ice bar, complete with ice couches, for a magical après-ski experience!

History of the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

Originally opened in 1911, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise has been a luxury destination for more than a century. Built by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), it was designed to encourage tourism to the Canadian Rockies. The stunning location by Lake Louise—once a remote alpine site—was transformed into an iconic resort that became known for its grand architecture and spectacular views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

5. Explore the Town of Banff

  • Walk Around Downtown Banff: Full of unique shops, restaurants, and galleries, Banff’s downtown has a lively energy perfect for exploring on foot.
  • Chuck’s Steakhouse: Indulge in a top-notch steak dinner in a luxurious yet cozy atmosphere.
  • Fairmont Banff Springs: Often called the “Castle in the Rockies,” this historic hotel is a must-visit for its grandeur, history, and magical ambiance. 

History of the Fairmont Banff Springs

The Fairmont Banff Springs opened in 1888 and was also built by the Canadian Pacific Railway to attract tourists to the area. Designed by architect Walter Painter, this “Castle in the Rockies” has served as an iconic symbol of luxury in the heart of Banff National Park. The building has undergone multiple expansions and renovations over the years, but its historic charm remains. Known for its stunning turrets, Scottish baronial style, and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, the Fairmont Banff Springs has been a favorite among royalty, celebrities, and visitors from all over the world.

6. Experience Banff Skijoring at the Winter Festival

If you’re visiting during the Banff Winter Festival, don’t miss the unique event of Skijoring! This thrilling competition features cowboys skiing and snowboarding behind galloping horses through the streets of Banff. It’s a one-of-a-kind, action-packed spectacle, combining the excitement of winter sports with the heritage of Western Canada.

7. Take Scenic Drives Through the Rockies

  • Be prepared to do a lot of driving during your trip, but trust us—it’s worth it. Every twist and turn offers breathtaking views of towering peaks, frozen lakes, and snow-covered forests.
  • Tip: Create a playlist to match the scenery! Some of our road trip favorites included:

Things We Missed (But Would Love to Do Next Time)

Even with a packed itinerary, there are still a few things we didn’t have time for, but we’re definitely planning to do them on our next visit!

1. Take a Walking Tour of the Fairmont Banff Springs

The Fairmont Banff Springs offers guided walking tours that dive deep into the history and architecture of the hotel. The tours often include stories about its construction, notable guests, and secrets hidden within the castle-like building. If you’re a history lover or enjoy stunning architecture, this is a must-do!

2. Go for a Hike in Banff National Park

  • Johnston Canyon is an obvious choice for an unforgettable hike, especially in the winter when the frozen waterfalls look magical.
  • Other great hikes to explore include Sulphur Mountain, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding area (you can even take a cable car up if you’re not in the mood for a long trek) and Lake Agnes trail for a peaceful, scenic hike with views of the beautiful Lake Agnes.

3. Explore Kicking Horse Resort

We heard so many great things about Kicking Horse Ski Resort during our trip, and it’s definitely on our list for next time! Known for its exceptional powder and stunning terrain, it’s considered one of the top resorts in Canada, perfect for skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing.

4. Try Dining at The Grizzly House

The Grizzly House in Banff is an iconic fondue restaurant known for its cozy, rustic atmosphere. It’s a great spot to try something different, with fondue options that include everything from cheese to meats like bison and yak.

5. Visit Lake Minnewanka

Just a short drive from Banff, Lake Minnewanka offers stunning views and plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. In the summer, it’s popular for boat tours, hiking, and picnicking, but even in the winter, the snow-capped mountains and frozen lake provide a serene backdrop for a walk or a photo op. If you’re into history, this area also has a fascinating story—there’s a submerged town beneath the lake that dates back to the 19th century

6. Take a Gondola Ride to the Top of Sulphur Mountain

  • Sulphur Mountain is one of the most iconic peaks in Banff, and you don’t have to hike all the way up to take in the breathtaking views. The Banff Gondola takes you to the summit in just a few minutes. From there, you can walk the boardwalk to the observation deck and enjoy 360-degree views of Banff, the Bow Valley, and the surrounding mountains. In the winter, it’s especially magical with the snow-covered landscape!
  • Dining at the Top: At the top of Sulphur Mountain, you’ll find Sky Bistro, a cozy restaurant offering delicious meals with a view. You can enjoy local dishes and warming drinks while taking in the spectacular vistas. It’s the perfect place to relax and savor the experience after your gondola ride.
